For episode 51 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will extend our exploration of the life of Philip Bliss. Throughout his career in the music business, Philip Bliss was a great personal soul-winner. One of those who he reached was another talented musician, James McGranahan. Philip encouraged James to know the thrill of serving the Lord with his great talent. Philip and Lucy Bliss would take a train from Chicago to return home.  During the ride, as the train was coming into the station in Ashtabula, Ohio, there was a terrible train wreck. Just 100 yards from the station as the train crossed the trestle, the trestle collapsed sending the train plunging 70 feet below. Of the 159 souls on the train, 92 were killed. Philip survived the fall, but was last seen re-entering the burning wreckage to search for his wife. Listen along as we discuss the second part of the life of Philip Bliss.

For episode 50 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will explore the life of Philip Bliss. We know Philip Bliss as a prolific hymn writer and we sing many of his hymns most Sundays.  Philip Bliss was born into a poor Pennsylvania farmer's home.  Though money was not in abundance, his parents gave him a rich godly heritage. From a young age, Philip had an exceptional musical talent, making instruments and a gifted singing voice.  He would use this talent for the glory of God. Most people have Colgate products in their homes, but few may know the story of William Colgate.  For episode 49 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will explore the life of William Colgate. From a young boy, William's parents taught him at least 10% of every dollar belonged to God.  This teaching followed him throughout his life. At sixteen, William left his parents farm to find work in NYC to find work. He found it working for a soap boiler. At that time, most housewives made their own soap; William sought to disrupt that.  He found a way to mass produce soap and scented it! As he saw God bless his business, he never forgot his commitment to give God at least 10% of his income. Listen along as we discuss the life of William Colgate.

For episode 48 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will explore the life of Daniel Defoe. Most know Daniel Defoe as the author of Robinson Crusoe.  However, most do not realize he was a Baptist. His parents were devout Baptists and passed this knowledge down to young Daniel, but he never made a personal profession of his faith in Christ, until his later years. If you read the book, Robinson Crusoe, Defoe gives his own testimony through the testimony of the character, Crusoe. Listen along as we discuss the life of Daniel Defoe.

For episode 47 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will discuss the ministry of Georgi Vins. Georgi was born to parents Peter and Lydia Vins in 1928 Siberia, Russia.  Georgi spent most of his life under Communist rule. As a small child, Georgi would experience his Father sentenced to prison.  His crime was preaching the Gospel.  Georgi and his mother would not hear what happened for over 60 years. After the conclusion of WWII, Georgi and his mother moved to Kiev where he earned an engineering degree.  For a time, they and the Baptists enjoyed a time of relative freedom, but that would change. Throughout Georgi's ministry, he was imprisoned multiple times and always resisted the Communist regulation. Listen along as we discuss how God used the ministry of Georgi Vins.

For episode 46 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will discuss the ministry of Tom Malone. Tom Malone accepted the Lord as his personal savior as a nineteen year-old young man. From that moment, Tom knew the Lord was calling him to preach. For his training, Tom attended the newly started Bob Jones College.  In addition to his textual studies, Tom Malone was working to reach souls for Christ through his soul-winning efforts. Upon graduation from Bob Jones, Tom took two small churches in the Detroit, MI area.  Later, he founded the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Pontiac, MI. Throughout his ministry, he preached in many of the largest Baptists churches throughout our nation. The most notable mark of Tom Malone's ministry was his unending soul-winning efforts. Listen along as we discuss how God used the ministry of Tom Malone.

For episode 45 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will discuss the ministry of Lee Roberson. Most know Dr. Lee Roberson for his pastorate of Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN.  God lead him to take the pastorate in 1942.  He would pastor this church for over 40 years. During this time, God also lead him to start Tennessee Temple University, where hundreds of preachers were trained for ministry. Also, Lee Roberson began Camp Joy to reach thousands of children with the Gospel.  Camp Joy started in memory of Lee Roberson's youngest daughter, Joy, who died soon after birth. Listen along as we discuss how God used the ministry of Lee Roberson.

For episode 44 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will discuss the ministry of Harold Sightler. God called Harold to the ministry in 1940.  To answer the call, Harold bought a tent and set it up in various places to preach the gospel. A couple years later, while he was attending Furman University, God led Harold to start a radio program, "A Bright Spot Hour."  By the 1980s, the program was heard from coast to coast on over 100 radio stations.  The program was just simple preaching of God's word and encouraging believers. During the 1960s, Harold Sightler started Tabernacle Baptist Bible College, as a ministry of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Listen along as we discuss how God used the ministry of Harold Sightler.

For episode 43 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will discuss the ministry of Ford Porter. In 1918, Ford Porter began to pray for a ministry that would be a witness around the clock, long after his death.  Little did he know how God would answer that prayer. During his pastorate in Princeton Indiana, God lead Porter to write a gospel tract.  His tract was simply, "God's Simple Plan of Salvation."  Little did he know how God would use his initial printing of 2,000 tracts. God has used this tract many thousands of times over, long after Porter's death. Listen along as we discuss the ministry of Ford Porter.

For episode 42 of the "50 Baptist You Should Know" Series, we will discuss the ministry of Lester Roloff. There may not have been a man with a bigger heart than Lester Roloff as he ministered to the down and out of the nation. Beginning in 1944, Lester Roloff started the Family Alter Program on the radio.  He and his church led in opening several missions to reach the wayward drunkards and addicts as well as the neglected sin wrecked boys and girls. Listen along as we discuss how God used the ministries of Lester Roloff to reach hundreds, if not thousands of wayward souls, even in the face of strong opposition.
