When kids are forced to act like parents, it affects them for life as they often grow up to be compulsive caretakers. Emotionally immature parents create a childhood atmosphere of emotional neglect. In a family run by distant, unpredictable and self-absorbed parents, the most sensitive and perceptive child often takes on the family role of attending to other people's problems and needs.
• I was forced to be my mother’s mother and this blocked my ability to be a child.
• I was very lonely and both afraid and uncomfortable asking for attention.
• I was obligated to take care of others and never myself (codependency)
• This lead to psychological and spiritual exhaustion – living a false life.
