12 years ago, before the Maz was open, Blake suffered from a sudden heart attack. The night of his heart attack he had bypass surgery. His hospital journey lasted from November until April that year, and ended with him receiving a heart transplant.

He remembers looking out the window from his room and seeing the Maz, and Darlene remembers how excited staff were for it to open. Blake has continued to receive ongoing care at the Maz these last 12 years.

Darlene has been his constant partner – as a former nurse – she is the perfect person to help him take care of himself and he considers himself very lucky. They have been on this journey together.

They still see staff at the Maz that helped treat Blake 12 years ago. They consider all his care team members to be part of their family. They are so wonderful and look after him well. They believe that providing healthcare is a team effort, and that you need the best people, the best technology, and the best facility together to provide the best care – and that is what they have in the Maz.
