In this Mandarin episode, I explore why China only uses Beijing time despite the fact that it spans across 5 different time zones, compare China's time zone use with that of continental USA, and talk about East Coast bias in both China and the US.

Some useful words:

  1. 东八区(dōng bā qū): East 8 Zone (UTC/GMT +8 hrs) (Beijing Time is GMT +8hr) 
  2. 全球(quán qíu): worldwide, global
  3. 按...划分(àn... huàfēn): categorize, divide ... according to
  4. 标准(biāozhǔn): standard
  5. 根据(gēn jù): based on, according to 
  6. 横跨(héng kuà): span across (geographically)
  7. 统一(tǒngyī): unified, uniform
  8. 绝大部分(jué dà bùfèn): the vast majority
  9. 幅员辽阔(fúyuán liáokuò): vast size (e.g. of a country, geographic regions)
  10. 作为(zuòwéi): as
  11. 合理(hé lǐ): reasonable 
  12. 顺便(shùnbiàn): by the way
  13. 人口(rénkǒu): population
  14. 赛事(sàishì): competition (e.g. sporting)
  15. 报道(bàodào): reporting
  16. 重视(zhòngshì): to attach importance to, to value 
  17. 照顾(zhàogù): take care of,  show consideration
  18. 观众(guān zhòng): audience
  19. 总决赛 (zong jué sài): final
  20. 东岸偏见(dōng àn piān jiàn): east coast bias
