David Ayer

They say the best story tellers have experienced quite a bit in life; one look at Writer/Director/Producer (and in an isolated case, actor) David Ayer’s resume, you definitely know the man has lived. Respect is paid in the Penthouse to this veteran of military service turned Suicide Squad assembler.  Whether it’s Leto’s portrayal of the Joker or Will Smith’s Deadshot, we are curious what the director of such layered story telling as Training Day will offer up. Regardless, it was a pleasure to illuminate the works of a fellow west coast dweller.

What if Man of Steel was in Color?

The folks at VideoLab recently unveiled a video that bumped up the colors of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel film to give it a more accurate color palette. The results incited a rather diabolical conversation up in the penthouse, one that spilled over into this session. We have to say, seeing the “Man of Steel” in all of his colorful glory, took us right back to the Christopher Reeve films we grew up on. Color is definitely missing from this film as well as the DC Cinematic Universe as a whole. Not all of DC Comics’ pantheon of characters are dark and brooding; a little color mixed in with characters like Superman, Wonder Woman and Aquaman could  go a long way. Take a look at the video below and tell us you don’t agree.

This Week’s Dope

Chuck’s Dope

Dark Knight III – Frank Miller’s tweet bombshell of a third iteration to the famed Dark Knight series left me all abuzz this week. While I’ll readily admit the sequel to The Dark Knight Returns didn’t live up to the original tale, Frank Miller’s Dark Knight universe is still one of the more stimulating experiences involving the Caped Crusader I’ve endured. I eagerly anticipate venturing back into this dark and gritty world… Miller will usually get me every time. My dope this week.

Curtis’ Dope

Black Manta – Rumor. Speculation. These are everyday words in any fans vocabulary these days- this week overshadowed by all the Leto Joker hoopla was a casting that caught my attention.  Common, an intimidating yet sensitive presence on screen, was cast in The Suicide Squad…and rumor has it he may play my favorite DC villain, Black Manta. My dope this week is speculative.
