Back in my 9-5 days, my boss gave me unforgettable piece of advice, during a particularly stressful week of work.

I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything on my plate and worried that my inability to get everything completed that had been assigned to me would reflect poorly on me.

I was clearly running myself ragged trying to look good, and it was affecting the quality of my work. Like most young employees, I was eager to look good and be a ‘team player’. This was manifesting as:

  • Working late into the evening
  • Coming in on an occasional Saturday
  • Stressing out about work obligations while I was at home

Until one day, my boss said to me:

Look, At The End Of The Day, We’re Not Saving Lives

That day, the light bulb went off in my head. I was like, “hey, you’re right?!”

I was so deeply immersed in worrying and wondering that I couldn’t see the forest for the trees. While the work we were doing was important, when you compare it to what front-line workers have to deal with day-in & day-out, it pales in comparison.

It was also a healthy reminder that at the end of the day, most of our daily stresses, would look much different if given some room for perspective.

I’m constantly reminded of this phrase when I’m having a particularly challenging week with my personal life, “This too shall pass.”
