The perfect voice for storytelling
John has a perfect voice for reading these stories. It is a delight to hear him read O Henry or Lovecraft. I do wish he would make his background music a little less intrusive. But still this a top-notch podcast. Highly recommended!

Too Many Ads
I was looking to add another short story podcast to my list. This one seemed promising and at first it was. However, I just tried to listen to a story that was 15 minutes long and the first five minutes were nothing but ads. I thought OK at least that’s over with then there were additional ads in the middle of the stories as well. Very frustrating to break up the flow of the story.

Great show
Jon Hagadorn has a great voice and pace. He selects good stories and sets the stage for the listener. The entrance music is a great intro as well!

Great Stories, Well Read
Jon does a great job of picking and narrating stories. If you are looking for outstanding classics that are well performed, this is the podcast for you.
Bonus, these stories are suitable for the entire family.

Please don’t read racist stories
I’ve enjoyed many of the 100+ year-old stories, such as most of those about Sherlock Holmes, very much.
However, please remove racist stories, or, at least, edit it out the racist parts and explain that you’ve done so. “The Call of Cthulhu” should just be deleted; it’s awful. It describes Black & Brown people in incredibly ignorant and hurtful ways. Another example is “The Luck of Roaring Camp”, about an “orphaned” baby at a mining camp. The miners gave zero aid, sympathy or respect to his mother, apparently because she was Native American and unmarried, even when she was abandoned by the baby’s father, and dying alone in childbirth. Perpetuating such awful attitudes is a huge disservice.
Also, please consider using a pronunciation guide for less familiar words.
Otherwise, thank you for providing so many hours of engaging stories. I really do enjoy most of them.

Brilliant! (First Review After Many Podcasts Listened To)
I’ve only begun to scratch the surface of the wonderful collection of stories assembled in this podcast, but I am unquestionably hooked. Very well-curated and read with splendid pace, inflection, and emphasis. Jon makes the stories come alive and feels like a dear friend sharing them with you. I love recommending particular favorites to friends and family.

Great storytelling!
I have been enjoying several of the 1001 podcasts for the last few years. This is my current favorite. I have enjoyed a few of the stories so much that I purchased the books for our family. Thank you John Hagadorn for sharing your gift of storytelling. I feel like I have a kind and interesting grandpa reading to me. It’s relaxing and entertaining.

Great Stories and Reading Voice but…
Please stop using the sound effects and background music. At times I could barely hear the audio of the story. At other points the sound effects made no sense, like jungle noises when the story said the jungle was quiet, or gunshots occurring several sentences after they were mentioned. I’d much prefer just a plain read of each story without all the added effects.

Continually Thankful for this Podcast!
My week doesn’t feel complete without listening to at least one episode of 1001 Classic Short Stories and Tales. Jon, you continue to do a fantastic job. I am grateful for the dedication, time, effort, and resources you’ve committed to this wonderful podcast. Thank you for sharing your passions with your listeners! I love the bloopers you put at the end sometimes, they’re so endearing! You’re the best. I look forward to someday sharing this podcast with my future children and using it for them as both education and entertainment. I love that you make literature exciting! Always recommending this podcast to my friends and family. Keep up the great work, Jon, and don’t listen to the haters! I loved your message addressing the negative commenters, and was cheering for you as I listened! Hope you have a wonderful fall season, and I’m looking forward to maybe some spooky theme stories like you’ve done in the past!

Another old time favorite memory
Another great memory of grandma reading to me as a child Wasn't one of her favorite but grandpa loved them so much he had a collection of Quatermaine books He would often sit in his chair and listen as she read His eyes were getting worse as he aged Blame it on his wounds to his head from his time in France WW1 What great memories hearing you read them

I absolutely love your podcast. I look forward to every new episode and sometimes replay them again. Your voice is the other big part for me. It’s just….comforting and familiar. Thank you for the time away you give me when I get lost in your stories. Please keep it up. ♥️

Such a pleasure!
What a pleasure to listen to your stories! You choose stories with such beautiful writing, and your voicing brings out the best in these wonderful tales. It’s clear you have great respect for the authors, and do your very best to make their work every bit as compelling as it is in print. I especially like the stories set in France, and you do a nice job with French words and terms. With all the pressures of daily life, it’s great to lose myself in one of your stories and blot out the whole outside world while I wait to find out what happens! Five stars, for sure.

A helping hand!
Having a difficult time reading for reasons beyond my control, I am grateful for this salvation. In times gone by, I was an avid reader and always enjoyed the unveiling of the story. Now, I find the same pleasure in listening to Jon’s readings. Five Stars and accolades galore!

Absolutely the BEST Podcast
I stumbled across 1001 Short Stories & Tales podcast about a year ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. I’ve never been much of a reader so having this podcast has been an eye-opening experience to all the great writers and classic short story literature out there. Jon is not only a great reader, but his passion for classic literature is obvious and contagious. This podcast is my favorite of all the growing 1001 series that Jon produces. If you’re thinking of giving this show a try, I guarantee you’ll enjoy it! I also want to encourage all you regular listeners out there to sign up to financially support this podcast. If everyone who really enjoys this show gave just $1 a month, we’d really help ensure Jon could continue this for a long time! God bless you, Jon!

Excellent Read
The reader allows the listener to imagine there own details surrounding the story.
Not clouded with superfluous music and “effects” which can distract the listener from the intent of the original authors.
Keep up the great work

Expands my World
Such a great podcast! I don't subscribe to many, but 1001 Classic Short Stories and Tales is one. Though I like to read, I had largely forgotten about the authors of the past. But Jon has brought life to many authors whom I had known by name, but not by their work. The Robin Hood stories are some of my favorites, though the recent reading of "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is outstanding as well.

Wished for better…
Many stories are of value, but they often seem chosen from the same limited sets of authors, presumably those the amateur curator is familiar with, and often covering very minor, inferior stories by authors who also had a few great ones rather than trying to cover more truly great works by a greater variety of authors. The claim that the stories are “family friendly” is belied by the inclusion of a Jack London story which was outrageously genocidal and racist, with little serious contextualization or analysis, along with many of Kipling’s more mildly racist works. Minor criticism: the pronunciation of certain words is occasionally odd. The podcast world could use a better story list, narrated and curated by someone more expert in world literature history, and languages.

Preserving Culture
As a younger member of society, I sometimes fear I will be trapped in a time isolated from the past and our rich culture. This podcast relieves my worries as it is a cultural library in its own right. Many of our culture’s secret and high-quality literary works can be found right here.

Thank you so very much John, all of your 1001 shows are great, fantastic!
Such a wonderful variety of true stories, real hero’s, mysterious legends and all very well orated!
I first discovered your 1001 hero’s legends histories and mysteries, and listened to the episode about Victorios gold, and I have been hooked ever since.
I am familiar with many of the stories but your versions always include new bits of information or a new look.
Thank you John, and keep ‘em coming!!

Excellent narration of classic stories
Looked for well told stories with quality sound — found this on a search for “stories” on Apple’s iTunes Podcasts. I’ve clicked “follow” and have added auto downloads. I’ll also check in on Spotify as that helps me when listening thru my Amazon Alexa speaker. Thank you, John Hagadorn, for your time and attention to reading the older / classic stories.

The Ransom of Red Chief vy O. Henry
John, I have always liked the stories of O. Henry. You got the spirit of the tale if how a kids held two grown men hostage ending up with them having to pay Red Chief’s father to take his kid off their hands.
Well read,

I love this podcast
This has quickly become my favorite podcast. I love the short story format that fits nicely within the timeframe of my commute home. The podcast has a wonderful selection of classic writers. It is a pleasant change from listening to the news and the dreary state of affairs of our nation on my ride home.

Love this
I usually listen to science fiction podcast stories and remembered that I used to listen to and love short stories. So my search brought me right to this podcast. Then I remembered that I had listened to another 1001 podcast from Jon Hagadorn so I got this and am really happy with the stories. One problem, I listen to the podcasts at night before falling to sleep. But for me Jon’s voice just hits me right in the “voice to fall asleep to” zone. So I find I usually fall asleep about 10 minutes into a story and everytime I wake up I have to reset the clock back to the last place I remember, usually about 10 minutes from when I last remember. But I absolutely HAVE TO FINISH IT. I then am so into the story that a 30 minute story takes about an hour to listen to. To contrast, most other podcasts I listen too have me still wide awake after an hour. So for me this podcast is so right for me on several aspects. Great stories that interest me with a great variety of authors and types of stories (Jack London to Ray Bradbury) and reading that actually relaxes me at night and interests me. Also, his favorites on Britbox are all of my favorites. Every one of them!
