Peter first gives advice to wives and husbands concerning how they are to relate to each other in their culture. The chapter ends with a difficult to understand passage concerning Jesus’ victory over the kingdom of darkness. 

Peter shows how the church’s identity is tied to its mission and how they are supposed to function in relation to political structures.
