hello crafters and quilt makers from all around the world welcome to royal clarence now i'm a quilt maker but i i wouldn't say i make quilts for a living per se but it's something i've done all my life when my kids were little they all had their own quilts and what i did was i made each quilt because they last for years darlings and i made each quilt specific to their personality and this is um what i call narrative when you're making something for a person if you have an idea of the things that that they like um the colors that their favorite colors their personality how
does their personality how would you represent their personality in fabrics for example so one of my children was very colorful very extrovert and i made her quilt out of brightly colored satins and sheer fabrics amongst other things it's good to mix and match that's for sure and another one was very pink she's very pink girly and i made her quilt more pastely do you see and this is how the narrative for each quilt developed now i just think it's much much better to have a narrative at the start you you will find that you are drawn to things quicker there's less time for searching for the correct um fabrics or or pictures now i'm making a pictorial um quilt
today um i'm using pictures from old t-shirts now i i went on to ebay and i bought a job lot of t-shirts they were rock t-shirts mostly from germany that's what the gentleman told me actually when the t-shirts arrived they weren't quite what i was expecting um they were more i would say samples of corporate t-shirts so really they didn't quite fit my remit um there were no uh pin up style t-shirts which was really what i wanted um but what i what i'm doing the narrative for this quilt is the life cycle of the pinup girl so or legend and myth or all of these things what happens actually when i create um an item whatever it is i'm doing i if you create a storyboard and it doesn't have to be a big fancy storyboard just a list of words can be your
storyboard but a list of words that represent what this narrative is going to be it's so helpful so this narrative for this quilt is um the the birth of a legend a pinup star legend and then her death and it's a female legend it doesn't mean to say there's not going to be anything male in it but that's the narrative so everything i use is going to somehow fit into that story and i'm going to do it in a circular picture so it will be centered from as if like a flower so um or a spiral i'll see how it works out because i haven't you know nothing's final until i've got the sewing machine out and stitched at the moment we're at the cutting and pinning stage but i i imagine it's going to be a flower and i imagine that it's probably going to be um a picture with an a top side and a downside rather than i'm making a square but rather than a picture that can be
looked at from all four angles now i'm doing that really because so many of the t-shirts haven't have an upside and a downside you know you're looking at them and they're not upside down and so it makes sort of logistic sense if you like it makes geometric sense to keep that format also if um if you want to hang it up as a a wall hanging at a later date it makes more sense to have a top and a bottom but if you were using something that was a little bit less um portrait-like you could make more of a floral shape and it could be all angles so you...
