Elissa Babe is a Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Cardiac Sciences Holding & Recovery. Elissa sees and treats patients with a variety of heart conditions including blockages and narrowing of heart blood vessels, scar tissue, and leaky valves, from babies to people in their 90s in her position as an RN in the Cath Lab. Elissa enjoys working in the Cath Lab because she feels she sees a unique perspective. Patients are able to see immediate results and many are able to walk out of her unit and go home the same day as their procedure. She is able to hear from her patients and listen to their stories. Many of the procedures they perform in the Cath Lab are more minimally invasive that other procedures, allowing patients to recover quicker. In the Cath Lab they perform angiograms to identify problems with the heart and angioplasties, for instance using catheters and stents to open blood vessels, to treat patients. Throughout her time working in the Cath Lab, imagery has continuously improved. They are able to clearly see arteries allowing for better diagnosis and treatment of patients. Last year funds raised through Heart Pledge Day were used to purchase new diagnostic equipment, including an echocardiogram machine.
