Peter instructs us not once, not twice, but three times in this short letter to "be SOBER".
The Greek word he uses for sober, however, means more than merely not being out of control due to intoxication.  It means to be sensible, reasonable, aware and responsible in how we live our lives to honor the Lord our God.
In chapter 1 verse 13, we read "Therefore, (because you have such a great salvation ahead of you) with minds that are alert and fully SOBER, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.
In chapter 5 verse 8, we are told to "Be alert and of SOBER mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith..."
And in today's reading, 1 Peter
7 Therefore (because the end of all things is near) be alert and of SOBER mind so that you may pray.
8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.
9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
