Special Guests: Brandon Bumgarner and Ryne Ladley a 24-year-old now unemployed because of COVID-19, is not a movie star or celebrity. But in the Memphis sports community, he is an icon many recognize by his passion for Memphis sports. “I don’t think people should ever live in fear,” Bumgarner said. “Sports bring me joy and I couldn’t imagine living any other way.”Bumgarner has made engulfing himself in Memphis sports commonplace, yet he now faces a challenge he has never faced before. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent cancellation of sports events, Bumgarner joins a large group of Memphians in a search to fill the gap.Attending Grizzlies, Redbirds, 901 FC and University of Memphis events has been replaced with a hibernation-like adaptation to the socially distant times for Bumgarner. His days are now spent playing video games, catching up on sleep and watching NFL Draft projections.“I’m doing okay now, but I speak for myself, I don’t know about everyone else,” Bumgarner said. “I’m worried that sports may change after this. People weren’t going to games before, so why would they go after the virus did as much as it did?”Often found shouting on Tiger Lane or outside the locker rooms at FedexForum, Bumgarner schedules his life around sports. The tradition he adopted from his parents created an emotional attachment as well, perhaps making the time without sports more difficult to ride out.memphismirror.com
