Philadelphia follows the story of a successful lawyer (Andrew Beckett, played by Tom Hanks) who is fired from his law firm after they discover he has AIDS. Andrew hires a homophobic attorney, Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), to represent him in a wrongful termination suit. As they work together, Joe's prejudices are challenged, and he begins to see Andrew as a human being rather than a disease.
