Cultivating a Calm Mind 30 Day Mindfulness Challenge
DAY 3 – BELLY BREATHING
When you are feeling stressed, anxious or overwhelmed, your breathing tends to be short and shallow and in and out of the mouth.
Practising mindful breathing (aka belly breathing, diaphragmatic breathing or nasal breathing) has many benefits. By breathing in and out through your nostrils and focussing on the movement the air makes in your chest and stomach, this:
- Give your busy mind something else to focus on
- Filters the incoming air
- Engages your parasympathetic nervous system (calming effect)
- Lowers your heart rate
You can also watch me demonstrate Belly Breathing on my Youtube Channel.
If you have a fit bit watch check your heart rate before you do this exercise then after. Was there a difference?
