The First Punic War (264-241 BC) was the first of three wars fought between the Roman Republic and the Carthaginian Empire. It was fought mainly over the control of Sicily and the Mediterranean Sea. The war was a result of the expansion of Rome's power and influence into the western Mediterranean and the resulting clash of interests with the Carthaginian Empire.
