What's been your experience with feedback? Has it been mainly positive or negative? And, has your personal experience with feedback shaped how you give feedback?

We don't mess around. That's why this is our opening topic for Episode #1 of the 2120 podcast.

How not to suck at feedback:

  • Your attitude and beliefs about feedback are likely shaped by how you've received feedback. Bad experience? That may explain why you suck at it.
  • Your unwillingness to give feedback ensures your inability to achieve true success.
  • Giving feedback isn't only critical. Feedback can and should be positive and appreciative.
  • Leader:  let the win be a clear win. Make feedback specific - especially when recognizing something good.
  • Don't accept excuses when giving feedback.
  • Create systems for formal feedback to occur and for informal feedback to be daily.
  • Feedback shouldn't be once a year during the annual review.
  • Feedback should always be honest and direct.
  • Be mindful when giving feedback about how it's going to be received.
  • You must give performance feedback based on your organization's core values.
