In 1997, Grammy award winning artist Erykah Badu released one of her most famous songs, “Tyrone” on her live album, with the opening line: “Now keep in mind, I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my sh*t.”
This week, the hosts of the 2 Cool Parents Podcast are exploring of love of all things artistry with an episode diving into the $64 billion world of fine-art! A world that Black artists only make up 1.2% of the total art shown in museums. So let’s get sensitive and talk about Black art, the relationship between black artists and the mainstream fine arts auction houses, art flipping, and the relationship we have as Black millennial parents owning the work of and supporting Black artists.
We hope to make the names of artists like Faith Ringgold, David Driskell, Romare Bearden, Kerry James Marshall, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Charles White household names. We also highlight recent artists like Kehinde Wiley, Kara Walker, Amy Sherald, and Jordan Casteel as artists who were artists in residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem, NYC.
