John and Douglas have just returned from Tampa, FL, where they attended the HEaL Conference (Health, Education, and Leadership). John was recognized for his work in educating leaders first to learn to lead themselves and then to lead others better. 

Eight hours in the car gave them plenty of time to reflect and plan. One of the things that they developed was a system for leaders to help lead themselves and R.E.C.O.N.I.Z.E. the steps to becoming an effective leader. The acronym R.E.C.O.G.N.I.Z.E stands for the following:

R - Reflect

E - Equip

C - Care

O - Opportunity

G - Grow

N - Normal

I - Influence

Z – Zig and Zag

E – Engage your team

In addition to this new acronym John and Douglas discussed the definition of a leader, just the simple and plain meaning of "what is a leader, minus the qualifiers that are usually associated with the word "leader" like good, bad, evil, competent, incompetent, effective, etc.
