This week, we’re diving into the highs and lows of local and national news as the Senate is back in session after the holiday break:

  1. Congress must fund the government before Friday, with a bunch of large finance measures on the agenda, including raising the debt ceiling, the National Defense Authorization Act, and the Build Back Better Act.
  2. With fights over partisan and racial gerrymandering continuing, redistricting maps are entering their final stages, but new maps alone could determine if democrats will lose or win the House in 2022.
  3. A unique case about the new North Carolina voter ID law is being heard by the Supreme Court. The case will cover voter suppression, but interestingly enough, will also determine who can challenge and who can defend laws on behalf of the state.
